My step by step plan to complete my genius hour project was sort of difficult to come up with.
Since my last blog post it has been a little crazy and hectic ,however, I did have a lot of time to read because I went on vacation and there was way too much traveling. American Sniper
Over the first month or so of my semester 2 genius hour project I made quite a bit of progress. After I decided to stick with the same plan for my project I got right to reading. I started the novel The Firm by John Grisham which I instantly fell in love with. Someone recommended the book to me because they heard that I watched the show suits all the time. The show Suits is about a fictional law firm that deals with corporate law called Pearson Spector Lit formally known as Pearson Spector. The book was better than the show! It is one of the most intriguing and interesting books I have ever read and has amazing reviews because of it. The main character Mitch McDeere is arguably my favorite protagonist from any book I have ever read. All around it is a wonderful read and I would recommend it to anyone. I can't wait to write a full review on it!
WHY HAVE YOU DECIDED TO KEEP OR CHANGE YOUR GENIUS HOUR PROJECT FROM LAST SEMESTER? HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR GENIUS HOUR TO LOOK WHEN IT IS COMPLETE?
I think I am going to change my genius hour project and do something new because I really did accomplish what I wanted to last semester. I need to find something that really entices me though and motivates me to reach a goal. My last genius hour project ,although fulfilling, I was not that motivated and my interest level wasn't super high at times. Picking something I'll have fun doing and really have to think outside the box. A few ideas I have are maybe doing a project where I have to write about something or teach a certain skill to people. I will blog again when I decide what it is exactly I want to do. Thank you! What did you learn from perusing the Blogs of other students participating in Genius Hour/20 Time?
I learned a lot from looking at the other students projects and looking over their work. It was super interesting to see how some kids really tried to make an impact with their 20 Time movement and I was also impressed with how creative they were. I think the big thing about about Genius Hour/20 Time is how unique and interesting you can make your topic. When starting something like this you really need to be passionate about what your going to be working on. To me this was what I learned the most from perusing the blogs. How can you use what you have learned to impact your own Genius Hour project/ TedTalk? I need to really get creative with things and think outside the box a little bit. I need to make my topic intriguing and put some effort into grasping my viewers attention. I also need to speak to my What progress do you still need to make towards your Genius Hour Project? How did Sir Ken Robinson's talk resonate with you?
How might/might not Genius Hour support Ken Robinson's ideas about how to change education? Sir Ken Robinson's speech was very powerful and really made a lot of sense to me. Being a senior in high school I pretty much know all of the ropes and know pretty much exactly what to expect. The worst part of school is it's boring. If a student doesn't want to be there it drastically effects their quality of work. I think what message he was trying to get across with his speech is that there needs to be a spark lit in the classroom that makes kids passion about learning. Studying and classroom activities should seem less like labor and more like creative thinking and exploration. Genius hour is just the sort of thing that Robinson was talking about and I really think it's just what we need to bring more life into our learning experience. How could you incorporate what you saw into your own TED talk? What kinds of ideas about presentation skills did you think about Sir Ken Robinson presented his ideas about education? One thing that I thought was very interesting about Sir Ken Robinson's TED talk is how he grasped the audience attention. It was almost like he was talking to you personally as a friend and explaining his concern and ideas in such a passionate way. He never once found himself on a tangent and whatever he felt was important enough to share with the audience always tied back into his topic and why he was speaking about it. The sort of power that his speech had is exactly what I want to incorporate into my TED talk when I talk about my Genius Hour Project. Also, you need to be able to keep whoever it is you are speaking in front of intrigued and sometimes humor can be used appropriately to lighten the mood and engage your audience. I am still trying to figure out where exactly I am going to take my genius hour project and many different ideas have crossed my mind lately but I am still not quite sure what I should exactly do. However, the biggest help with my project is all of the resources and tools that I have at my convenience. My mom is a high school English teacher and a librarian so her input into my genius hour creation is much appreciated and considered. She has helped me narrow down what novels I want to read and the importance of understanding why these stories are classics.
First of all, I don't know an over abundance about books and I'm not exactly sure what "good writing" actually is but I still have an idea of why certain writers works have withstood the tests of time. There are a few defining characteristics of classic novels: thorough character development, strong moral or underlining message, and writing that seems even a little before it's time. These are all things that I have learned through my research and without access to the internet this project would certainly not be possible. I'm hoping that I can come up with a novel to read soon and really get my project started. My mom has been the biggest help with this just by helping me narrow down my book selection and giving me some of the greatest books of all time to read. Lately I have been using my time in class given to us to work on our Genius Hour projects to write blogs and work on my webpage. My time has been used wisely ,however, I am excited to finally start reading when I pick out a novel and I'm wishing to get a lot of time in class to do so. The way that my class time has been spent leads me to believe that this activity is going to be a major success, If you had an unlimited amount of time and funds to make your Genius Project all it could be, what would that look like?
If I somehow had an unlimited amount of resources and funds for my Genius Hour project, so many different ideas and opportunities would seem more possible. However, I do not have that kind of support for my work but don't think I haven't gave that some thought and wondered where I would take it. This project can have as big of an impact as you want it to and there are endless possibilities. Giving this all a lot of thought I have some pretty outlandish ideas. Out of all of these my favorite is doing a podcast or a show where I could discuss the books I've read and review them. Maybe even have authors come onto the show and discuss why they wrote the book and there personal opinions of their work. The books and their authors would benefit from this, along with the readers who are interested but may be uncertain about which novel to read. Therefore, I think the show would be a huge success and something people have never seen before. If I had everything I could possibly need for my Genius Hour project it would make getting the books, having the time to read them, and working on the reviews very easy and allow me to do better work which would ultimately benefit everyone. I think this project is going to be awesome either way and I can't wait till I can start. I created this web page in my English 12 class for our project called Genius Hour. I am excited about doing this assignment and I really like that it gives you the chance to be creative in school. Reading for leisure is something I have always wanted to do more of but I've never really set my mind to it and put aside the time.
Genius Hour totally allows me to do that and I can also share what I learn with others and hopefully inspire them to read more too. My biggest concern is finding the right books to read. I need to find novels that intrigue me and I wont want to put down. I also need to make sure that I make time to read and don't lose interest in my tasks. So far I have narrowed it down to a few classics and I think they would all be good reads. With just a few candidates left it's going to be hard to pick that perfect book to start my project off. |
